For my 33rd birthday, I decided to make myself my very first Barbie cake.  What a disaster!  Barbie just looked like she was drowning in cake.  My second Barbie cake, which I made on my 36th birthday, was much more successful.  I've decided to make it a tradition to create a doll cake for every one of my birthdays from now on and hope that I see progress :).  For my 37th birthday, I designed this Tinkerbell doll cake.  Her dress was inspired by a rainbow skirt that Carrie Bradshaw (Sex and The City) wore that I totally just fell in love with.  The cake is red velvet with cream cheese frosting, of course, covered with fondant/gum paste petals/leaves.

This was my very first attempt at a decorated cake/cupcake tower to go "public".  I had only been taking cake decorating classes for about a month.  I actually got an order for a cake at this party - the Elmo Cake.

This was the first cake I made for someone other than family or friends.  I was so nervous.  I don't think I'll ever get over the nerves I feel when I create a cake for someone I don't know well.

Barbie

 

I have always loved Barbie dolls.  I received one for almost every birthday and Christmas from my hanna-batta days and I have to admit, even a few as an adult.  So after about 4 or 5 sessions of cake decorating classes, I thought I might have learned enough to create a Barbie themed dessert table.

My bf was the rose expert.  His roses always looked so much better than mine.

Spidey

 

The biggest cake I made so far - three tiered (10x6x3) with each tier 2 layers thick.   The cake was dark chocolate, iced with vanilla buttercream, covered with fondant and decorated with gumpaste and ribbons.  The webs are made of white chocolate and cutey pie Spidey is made of rice-crispy treats.  Being as inexperienced as I am, I assembled the thing before delivering it.  Boy was it wobbling.  But we made it.
